Colon Scan
CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy) represents an
exciting advance in preventive medicine as it will attract thousands who
have been putting off conventional colonoscopy exams.
Although virtual colonoscopy has been accused of being
inaccurate, recent studies have shown virtual colonoscopy to find more
cancers than conventional optical colonoscopy. A study published
in 2007 in the New England Journal of Medicine compared 3,400 patients
who underwent a virtual colonoscopy to an similar number undergoing a
conventional colonoscopy. The conventional colonoscopy found 4
colon cancers. The virtual colonoscopy found 14 colon cancers and
8 cancers outside of the colon. For a fraction of the cost and no
need for IV sedation, the virtual colonoscopy has been demonstrated to
be a true advance in cancer detection.
