| There
are millions of Americans with high cholesterol with no evidence
of plaque. Likewise, many patients with high cholesterol have
lots of coronary disease.
The statin lipid lowering drugs primarily
lower risk by "stabilizing" plaque. Recent studies in the
cardiology literature imply that physician decisions about
lifelong therapy based solely upon risk factors will be
frequently wrong if one has access to heartscan results.
The best way to know whether drugs are
necessary and how aggressively you should be treated is with a
heartscan. We will sometimes recommend statins to people with
plaque even if their cholesterol level is low.
