Should you be on a
cholesterol lowering medication by this calculator? How
can the EBT test help your doctor make that decision?
The new NCEP guidelines
allow physicians to calculate the expected 10 year risk
of future heart attack episodes by examining the
presence and control of certain conventional risk
factors.
For example, if it is
determined that you have greater than a 20% risk over
the next 10 years, doctors are encouraged to treat you
to the same aggressive standards that are usually
reserved for those who have had previous heart attacks
(including getting the LDL cholesterol below 100).
However, recent studies prove that those recommendations
are often incorrect for INDIVIDUALS as measured by
electron beam tomography. We believe it is worth the
investment to know whether you should be treated or left
untreated for a lifetime based upon population
statistics —and that requires a heartscan.
